A group of young people were singing a birthday song at the table beside us. The birthday celebrant was wearing a beautiful lemon-yellow, flowing dress with soft floral prints and tiny ruffles lining the spaghetti straps. The back was bare down to the waist, and the layered hem brushed her ankles.
I suddenly was transported back to a time when I preferred pastels, florals, and soft ruffle accents. When I got home, I browsed through my closet and confirmed it: I have become Morticia Addams.
Corporate rules back when we were starting our careers dictated a strict template. Then came the age of minimalism—everybody started preferring beige over any actual color. Today, you're considered a standout just for wearing red. (And remember the Rachel Zoe era? Try wearing those chunky accessories now, and people will assume you're having a midlife crisis.)
Middle age and perimenopause may mean getting "dry," but we are not wilted. We can bloom with our fashion choices without compromising our professional careers.
Here are 5 tips for dressing happy in middle age:
1. Be Colorful—and Command Respect
Elle Woods wore bright colors in courtroom scenes and lectures, yet she still looked the part of a serious law student. We often forget that wearing color doesn't have to mean "Look at me!" Just as Elle chose rich burgundy instead of neon pink, you can opt for deep emerald instead of lime green, or a muted rose instead of fire-engine red. Save the high-voltage shades for a fun night out.
2. Be Sexy, Not Slutty
I’ve always been teased about having "premature hot flashes," so I naturally prefer sleeveless tops in our hot climate. While bare shoulders aren't always office-appropriate, petal or cap sleeves make a great compromise. (During residency training, a prescribed lab coat was my best friend for covering up sleeveless dresses!) Sexy doesn't mean letting your twins overflow from your chest, and work skirts only need to sit an inch above the knee. Cover a bare back with a tailored blazer—you’ll exude the confidence of someone with a sexy secret.
3. Choose One Statement Piece—Don't Become the Billboard
We grew up on Rachel Zoe styling: chandelier earrings, stacked bangles, and chunky necklaces. Middle age calls for a little restraint. We want to dress how we like, but we don't want to look like a walking Christmas tree at work. One statement necklace creates impact. A chunky necklace plus massive rings on four fingers makes you look like Thanos. Save the loud, clanking bangles for casual weekends—otherwise, your coworkers might think there are cats roaming the office every time you walk by.
4. Keep the Wildlife in the Wild
I’ve always loved animal print, but wearing a full head-to-toe pattern can easily look tacky. Keep leather to belts or subtle accents unless you're participating in a rodeo, and restrict faux fur or snake skin to purses and shoes. (And yes, stick to faux—you aren't a Neanderthal hunting for outerwear!)
5. Let Your Personality Out Through Your Footwear
We often assume nobody pays attention to our feet, so footwear is usually the first place we compromise on style for the sake of comfort. But if you love shoes, go all in! A bold, colorful, or beautifully structured shoe is the perfect place to play with fashion without feeling over-the-top.
Middle age does not mean defaulting into melancholy. We don't lose our personality just because we've accumulated a few decades. We can retain our youth, joy, and a touch of rebellion through our style choices—all while keeping our professional respect intact.
Now over to you: What fashion choice from your 20s do you secretly wish you could wear again?
